Welcome to Dumfries ~ “The Queen of the South”

Burns House Museum (Visit Scotland Media)

Explore Dumfries, the town where Burns spent his final, prolific years. Your first stop is Robert Burns House, the modest sandstone dwelling where he lived and wrote many significant works; step into his study and feel the presence of the poet at his desk. Continue to the Robert Burns Centre, an intimate museum with interactive exhibits and personal letters that reveal his deep ties to Dumfries. Then, pause for reflection at St. Michael’s Churchyard, where you’ll stand before Burns’ grand mausoleum—a testament to his enduring legacy. In the afternoon, wander the fields of Ellisland Farm, the idyllic riverside homestead Burns built with his own hands, offering an authentic glimpse into his family life and farming days. Return to your hotel for a peaceful evening of your choosing.

Brig o’ Doon Bridge (Visit Scotland Media)

Visit the Burns Cottage & Museum in Alloway, where Scotland’s national poet was born in 1759. Step inside the thatched cottage and immerse yourself in the modest beginnings of Robert Burns, surrounded by personal artefacts and memorabilia. A gentle stroll along the Poet’s Path will guide you past artistic sculptures inspired by his verse, leading to the beautifully tended Burns Monument and Gardens—a tranquil tribute overlooking the River Doon.

Walk across the legendary Brig o’ Doon, the iconic stone bridge immortalised in Burns’ eerie tale Tam o’ Shanter. The misty atmosphere and surrounding woods conjure the same ghostly mood that inspired his verses. Nearby, you’ll explore Alloway Auld Kirk, the ruinous churchyard steeped in folklore and said to be haunted by witches in Burns’ poem. In the afternoon, travel along the Ayrshire coastline to Culzean Castle—an 18th-century masterpiece perched dramatically on cliffside bluffs, offering panoramic sea views and glimpses into the lives of Burns’ contemporaries.

Wander its ancient ramparts and dungeons while hearing tales of the Jacobite risings that shaped Burns’ patriotic spirit. Continue to Tullie House Museum, where curated exhibits highlight the region’s cultural connections to Burns and his literary circle. The afternoon offers free time to roam Carlisle’s quaint streets, discover hidden bookshops, or relax in cosy cafés

DO YOUR OWN THING
