  • Take a Trip Back to Colonial Days at the Rackliffe House ~ A 1740s merchant-planter’s home overlooking Assateague Island and scenic Sinepuxent Bay.  This beautiful brick mansion overlooking Sinepuxent Bay at Assateague Island has stood for nearly 300 years witnessing passing Spanish Galleons, Barbary pirate ships, and the Revolutionary War. • Visit the Burley Oak Brewing Company for tour and tastings ~ Hoist a Pint at the Burley Oak Brewing Company. The brewers at Burley Oak take both their beer, and their planet seriously. That’s why they’ve worked with soil scientists and Eastern Shore farmers to grow indigenous ingredients for their organic Home Grown Ales. The Burley Oak Taproom is the perfect place to enjoy a glass (or take home a growler) of Burley Oak’s finest, with good food, great music, and new friends.

  • Visit and tour the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park and Visitor Center ~ The 17-acre Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center invites visitors to experience Tubman’s world through exhibits that are informative and emotive, providing an in depth understanding of Tubman’s early years spent in Maryland’s Choptank River region and her legacy as a leader, liberator and humanitarian in the resistance movement of the Underground Railroad.

Be transported by history. The history of the Underground Railroad flows through the waterways, wetlands, swamps, and tidal marshes of Dorchester County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This is where the secret network’s most famous “conductor,” Harriet Tubman, was born enslaved, grew up, and honed the skills—such as trapping, hunting, and using stars to navigate—she used to escape to freedom in Pennsylvania. She then returned 13 times to rescue more than 70 enslaved friends and family. Her heroic story is told at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. .

  • Visit and tour the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge ~ Known as the “Everglades of the North,” Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge was established in the 1930s as a waterfowl sanctuary for migrating species, and has been internationally recognized for its ecological importance. Here, lowland forest borders tidal wetlands with areas of shallow, brackish water, and the three habitats draw a diverse range of birdlife—more than 250 species have been recorded. Spend the afternoon  exploring the refuge, keeping an eye out for bald eagles and the Delmarva fox squirrel, a once-endangered species whose recovery has largely happened within the refuge.  Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is home to an incredible amount of plant and animal diversity in its three major habitats – forest, marsh and shallow water. The refuge contains one-third of Maryland’s tidal wetlands, which makes it an ecologically important area within the state.

Blackwater NWR is home to the largest natural population of formerly endangered Delmarva peninsula fox squirrels and is also home to the largest breeding population of American bald eagles on the East Coast, north of Florida.  The refuge has been called one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy..
